OpenOffice word2xml standalone?

I was thinking of playing around with the OpenOffice filters to patch up 
a word2xml (meaning OO xml) standalone filter for my apps or for 
inclusion into compatible open source code. But before getting into 
this, it would be wise to check whether anyone else has  done something 
similar already?
