I'm not questioning any of that Patrick. However we are specifying what is communicated in the format, not what happens in a client, which is practically anything. (They should talk about query results, not the queries themselves though. The query is in a query language, the query result looks like a table in the case of a relational-database/SQL query.) The material you quote is not relevant to the question about what the format of a table name is in this attribute.
However, for this specific issue, the relevant provision is that a DEFAULT SQL QUERY is *UNDERSTOOD*. The query is not written into the document by the producer, which would need to use a different value in another attribute to have form:list-source be in query syntax So consumer implementation of that default when form:list-source is a table name needs to know how to do any escaping and quoting of table names. I note, as you doubtless have already, that "database driver" is undefined in this specification and it is not even clear that it is accurate to mention such a thing in the statement at issue.
But I will do as is necessary in these cases and open a separate issue, since this one is confined to the grammatical issue you raised.
