There is one additional point, and that is, the generic
client has to handle multiple languages which of course
web browsers do. I do wonder what the overhead of that
is, but given the managed code idea, it can't be horrific.
The reason I bring it up is that one advantage of say,
VFP, is the Fox language itself. It is easy to work
in a relational system given the commands available.
Productivity is part of the equation here. I doubt
that I would want to spend a lot of time designing
forms first in SVG, then writing generic scripts to
do the job of a compiled app language.
Again, I like SVG. I am also rooting for X3D. The
most compelling experience I've had on the web was
the Cybertown concerts. Real time 3D is something
mysteriously evocative because after just a bit
of experience, it really does become like
being there, warts and all. So a forms-based system
may be the day gig bread and butter, but at night,
avatars rule. The future may be something a lot
more different than say, XForms or XDocs will support.
But then, as I said, nothing is inevitable.
