In case it matters I ran my tests on
GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
of Thu Aug 24 2000 on porky.devel.redhat.com
I'm not sure how long emacs has had this feature. I do remember that
10 years ago I routinely swapped files between emacs on SunOS and
various editors on my Mac and didn't worry in the least about line
ending conventions. It just worked.
