That makes sense to me.
While we have allotted funds for consultants, they haven't been
programmed for use yet. I'm concerned we might end up with a fair amount
of carry-over. Accordingly, I've been thinking about what other uses we
might legitimately have for Member Section funds.
We decided this year not to underwrite costs for attending meetings. We
haven't discussed things like publications, advertising, and various
professional services beyond the technical consultants we've used so
far.
There's a communications subcommittee in Electronic Court Filing TC, as
you may know. We are reviewing products about ECF 3.x for various
audiences. At some point, it might be advisable to produce something in
hard copy (or discs or thumb drives) for distribution at conferences or
otherwise. Last year, we produced a brochure for the Member Section.
That might also be something we'd like to produce in quantity for use at
conferences, etc. There are also costs for participating as a vendor in
conferences - is it possible that LegalXML might want to do that at
times?
Regarding other professional services, as we have specifications
developed that need more users, perhaps a marketing specialist or a
technical writer might be needed as part of our education, promotion, or
marketing efforts.
If we can identify a range of activities that might be funded through
the Member Section, perhaps that will inspire TCs to develop some
proposals that might help advance the adoption of their work products,
etc.
This is something we could discuss at a future Steering Committee
meeting.
