glossary expansion

Is it possible to perform the automatic glossary expansion described in 
Stayton Chapter 16 and emitting the expanded XML (the way the profiling 
spreadsheets emit the profiled XML)?

I have a document that is processed into several different 
presentations, at least one of which is produced with a non-XSLT engine 
(a custom DocBook to LaTeX translator). It'd be nice to insert all the 
glossary entries once, upstream.
