I used now pdftk to update the metadata. With a little bit of
XSL, it's easy to fetch the information and produce the correct
format for pdftk:

  <xsl:output method="text" encoding="ascii"/>

  <xsl:template match="article/title">
    <xsl:text>InfoKey: Title
InfoValue: </xsl:text><xsl:value-of select="."/><xsl:text>
</xsl:text>
  </xsl:template>
